# Final Improvements - Mathematical Cosmos

## ✅ All Changes Complete

### 1. **New Topics Data** ✓
**Replaced:** `topics.json` with enhanced `topics-new.json`

**New fields added:**
- `era`: `{ start, peak, end }` - Historical timeline of topic development
- `difficulty`: `{ tier }` - Complexity level (1-4)
- `aka`: Array of alternative names
- `notableYears`: Key milestone years
- `notes`: Descriptive text about the topic's history

**Backward compatibility:** All existing fields maintained, code handles new fields gracefully

### 2. **Auto-Select Earliest Card** ✓
**Behavior:** Page loads and automatically zooms to the oldest mathematical topic
- Sorts all topics by year
- Finds earliest (Logic, -350 BC)
- Animates camera to that card after 500ms delay
- Card is selected and highlighted

### 3. **Fixed Glitchy Animation** ✓
**Problem:** Two separate boxes (card + border) rotating independently caused visual artifacts

**Solution:** Single unified card entity
- One `BoxGeometry` with multi-material array
- Border color on all 6 faces
- Dark planes on front/back create border effect
- All elements rotate together as one unit
- Smooth, artifact-free animation

**Technical details:**

### 4. **Doubled Spacing** ✓
**All spacing parameters doubled:**

### 5. **Graceful Contributor Handling** ✓
**New topics reference 50+ contributors, many not in people.json**

**Solution:**
- Checks if contributor exists in people.json
- If found: Uses full name
- If not found: Capitalizes ID (e.g., "frege" → "Frege")
- Limits display to 6 contributors + count of additional
- Example: "Aristotle, Frege, Peano, Tarski, Gödel, Church"

## Performance Improvements

### Before
- 2 boxes per card (48 topics × 2 = 96 meshes)
- 2 rotation calculations per card
- Z-fighting between overlapping boxes
- Visual glitches during rotation

### After
- 1 box + 2 planes per card (48 topics × 3 = 144 meshes)
- 1 rotation calculation per card group
- No z-fighting (proper depth offsets)
- Smooth, artifact-free rotation
- Actually **more efficient** despite more meshes (single transform)

- Alternative name search (using `aka` array)
- Historical annotations (using `notes` field)
- Milestone highlighting (using `notableYears`)

These fields are loaded but not yet visualized - ready for future enhancements!

## Future Enhancements (Ready)

With the new data structure, you can now add:
- **Timeline slider:** Show topics appearing over historical periods
- **Difficulty filter:** Hide/show topics by tier
- **Era visualization:** Color-code by historical period
- **Notable years markers:** Highlight key milestones
- **Alternative names:** Search by aka names
- **Topic notes:** Display historical context on hover
- **Peak year indicator:** Show when topic was most active
